What counts as a dental emergency?

You don’t need to know your exact diagnosis to know it hurts. Here’s how to tell if it’s time to get help:

  • Severe or persistent toothache that won’t go away
  • Cracked, broken, or chipped tooth, especially if painful or sharp
  • Knocked-out (permanent) tooth
  • Dental abscess, with swelling, fever, bad taste, or pain when biting
  • Lost filling or crown causing pain or sensitivity
  • Bleeding or injury to the lips, gums, or tongue

Even if you're unsure, give us a call. We’ll help you decide the next best step.

What to do right now (first-aid tips)

While you’re getting to our office, these simple steps can help manage pain and protect your tooth:

1. Severe Toothache

  • Rinse gently with warm water.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medicine as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid chewing on the sore side.
  • Don’t place aspirin directly on your gums or tooth.

2. Cracked or Broken Tooth

  • Save any broken pieces.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Try not to chew on that side.

3. Knocked-Out Tooth (Permanent Only)

  • Hold the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
  • If dirty, rinse gently with water.
  • Try to place it back in the socket if you can.
  • If not, keep it moist in milk or saliva.
  • Call us right away. Time matters.

4. Swelling, Abscess, or Fever

  • Do not try to pop or drain it.
  • Don’t apply heat.
  • Call us quickly. Infections can spread fast and may need immediate care.

For heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, or possible jaw injury, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.

What to expect at your emergency dental visit

Your visit to Cornerstone Dental Care will begin with an exam and digital x-rays. This allows our doctors to clearly see the source of the problem and give you an accurate diagnosis.

From there, we’ll:

  • Explain what’s going on and answer your questions
  • Go over a personalized treatment plan
  • Begin treatment the same day whenever possible

Sometimes the first step is to get you out of pain, with follow-up visits scheduled for complete care. You’ll always know what’s happening and what to expect, with transparent fees and flexible payment options.

How Cornerstone Dental Care treats dental emergencies

Our focus is on relief, clarity, and long-term health. Common emergency treatments include:

  • Digital imaging and x-rays to pinpoint the issue
  • Temporary or permanent repairs for broken or cracked teeth
  • Root canal therapy or calming medications to reduce nerve pain
  • Tooth extractions when needed, with socket preservation for future options
  • In-house surgical care from our periodontist for more advanced cases

After urgent treatment, many patients continue with us for full restoration. Whether it’s a custom dental crown, a dental implant, or a cosmetic bonding procedure, our doctors help rebuild your smile with an expert touch.

Helping you maximize your dental insurance benefits

We believe dental care works best when it’s focused on you—not just what’s covered by insurance. That’s why Cornerstone Dental Care has chosen to remain out of network with all plans.

Being out of network simply means we’re not contracted with your insurance company, but if you have a PPO plan, you likely still have out-of-network benefits.

Here’s how we help you use them:

  • We verify your benefits before treatment
  • You’ll get a clear estimate based on your plan
  • We file all insurance claims for you

This lets us use the highest-quality materials, give you more time with the doctor, and tailor treatment to your actual needs, not what’s pre-approved by insurance.

If you don’t have insurance, ask us about our in-house membership plan that includes preventive care and discounts on services. It’s a great option for individuals, families, and those with high-deductible plans.

Emergency Dentistry FAQs

Can I be seen today?
We keep time available for emergencies and, while not guaranteed, we do our best to see you the same day on the days on which we’re open.

Will you stop the pain at the first visit?
Our primary goal is to help you get out of pain. We start with an exam and x-rays, then focus on relieving pain right away—even if the full treatment plan continues in future visits.

How do you treat abscesses or swelling?
We evaluate the area and may provide drainage, medication, or root canal treatment based on what we find. Fast care helps prevent complications.

Do you do extractions if needed?
Yes. Our periodontist is available for surgical cases. We perform gentle extractions in-office, with socket preservation for future implant options.

What if I’m nervous about treatment?
Many patients are. Our team is known for being calm, clear, and gentle. You’ll never feel rushed.

How much will it cost?
We’ll give you a clear estimate up front. Most PPO plans cover some out-of-network treatment, and we help you understand your portion before any treatment begins.

Whether you’re dealing with a knocked-out tooth or something that just doesn’t feel right, you don’t have to tough it out. At Cornerstone Dental Care, we’re ready to help you feel better, and plan what comes next.
